Hey Friend,
Having a brand message is one of the key pieces of your marketing strategy that can help you stand out from the crowd. But you might be asking yourself two very important questions…
What is a brand message?
Why do I need a message for my brand?
As a brand and messaging strategist and coach to many creatives and small business owners, I hear this a lot.
Now I know you have a never-ending to-do list and probably don’t want to add googling “How do I create a brand message?” to the top of it.
So here’s my definition of what a brand message is:
Your brand message is the words (often referred to as copy) that you use to describe or market your business. It’s how you communicate with your audience. And the goal of your message is to connect with and provide value to the people you want to serve.
Your brand message should be unique to you. The goal should be to bring your brand to life in words, which essentially means capturing the essence of your business in the copy you use on your social media, website, and other marketing materials.
Ok, now that you know what it is, you’re probably wondering how to do it…and no, you don’t have to be a copywriter or a branding consultant to do this! (Although, we can certainly help if you need it!)
If you want to start crafting your brand message on your own, today is your lucky day! I created a list of seven questions you can ask yourself to start the process of crafting your unique message for your business.
Ready?
7 Questions that can help you craft your marketing messaging:
- Who do you want to serve and why? What is this person struggling with? Why do you care about their struggles?
- Who do you want to show up as for your clients? Write a sentence describing how you would like your clients to describe you.
- How would you like to engage with your clients? Tough love, truth bombs, kindness, insight, inspiration, playfulness, etc.
- What is your greater mission? If you were to think beyond just the problem you solve, and your business was able to make a difference on a more macro level, what would your business do for the collective?
- What feelings do you want your brand to evoke in people engaging with your content? Happy, seen, understood, inspired, excited, etc.
- What is your motivation in business? What does your business’ success allow you to do on a more personal level? i.e. provide for your family in a way that makes your wife smile, inspire your kids, give yourself things you never had, prove that you can achieve anything you want, etc.
- What do you do at its most basic level? Pretend you’re explaining it to a middle schooler: What services do you provide? What do you help people do?
Take the time to answer these questions and touch on them in your content. You can subtly insert them into a social media post or just use them as a filter that you run all of your content through.
Either way, the goal is to keep your message focused on your audience. You want to be able to explain their problem to them better than they can explain it themselves.
